The Volvo XC40 is a compact crossover that has won the hearts of buyers since its debut in 2017, thanks to its Scandinavian design, safety features, and well-thought-out interior. In 2022, the model underwent a facelift, making it even more modern. Let’s take a closer look at what makes this car special, its body style options, and some interesting facts about it.

2022 Facelift: What Changed?

The updated XC40 received several important changes. First, the front end was slightly redesigned: the grille became more refined, and the bumper gained a more expressive look. Second, new wheel designs and body colors were introduced, including trendy two-tone combinations.

However, the main changes were technological. The interior now features an upgraded multimedia system based on Android Automotive, supporting Google voice commands and over-the-air updates. Additionally, the model became available in a fully electric version—the Volvo C40 Recharge, which is essentially a coupe-like modification of the XC40.

Body Styles

The Volvo XC40 is offered in three main variants:

  1. Standard Crossover (5-door) – A classic compact SUV with high ground clearance, comfortable seating, and a practical trunk (460 liters).
  2. XC40 Recharge (Electric) – A fully electric version with a range of up to 400 km (depending on the model). Externally, it’s nearly identical to the gasoline version but has some unique details, such as the absence of an exhaust system.
  3. Volvo C40 Recharge (Coupe-Crossover) – A sportier version with a sloping roofline for a more dynamic look. Technically similar to the XC40 Recharge but aimed at those who appreciate unconventional design.

Bumper Plastic (may vary): A blend of polypropylene and ethylene/propylene, 20% filler. Marking: >PP+E/P-TD20<

How to Remove the Front Bumper

  1. Lift and secure the hood.
  2. Remove nine push pins (inserted top to bottom) securing the upper part of the front bumper (grille).
  3. From underneath, unscrew six bolts (TORX, fastened bottom to top) securing the lower part.
  4. Turn the wheels to the side.
  5. In the wheel arches, unscrew four bolts on each side (TORX) securing the fender liners (front part).
  6. Release the front part of the wheel arch extensions (push the fender liner aside, reach between the bumper and liner, squeeze the clips with your fingers, and pull the extension toward you, bottom to top).
  7. (Left and right sides) Move the fender liner aside and unscrew two bolts (fastened top to bottom. The far bolts are awkwardly placed, requiring a suitable tool).
  8. Release the sides from the wing clips (grip the corner and pull down and toward you).
  9. With an assistant, remove the bumper forward (watch for wires and hoses).
  10. Disconnect electrical connectors (note: the wires are short).
  11. If equipped, disconnect the headlight washer system hoses.

  1. Open the tailgate.
  2. In the trunk opening, remove the damper struts (turn counterclockwise by 45° and pull toward you).
  3. From underneath, unscrew four bolts (TORX, fastened bottom to top).
  4. In the wheel arches, unscrew five bolts on each side securing the rear part of the fender liners.
  5. The tricky part: The wheel arch extension on the fender interlocks with the bumper trim. Free the extension (held by internal push pins—pull toward you) and disengage it from the bumper trim.
  6. Release the clips in the fenders (pull the corners toward you).
  7. Release the clips under the taillights (pull toward you).
  8. With an assistant, remove the bumper backward (watch for wires).
