Volvo S90 II / V90 II

The Volvo S90 and V90 of the second generation are flagships of the Swedish automotive industry, combining elegant design, cutting-edge technology, and unparalleled comfort. These models debuted in 2016, replacing the outdated Volvo S80 and V70, and underwent a facelift in 2020, which brought several updates. Let’s explore what makes these cars interesting, their body styles, and some fascinating facts about them.

2020 Facelift: What Changed?

Although there were no major structural changes, the updated S90 and V90 received several important refinements:

  • Exterior – Slightly redesigned radiator grille, new wheel options, updated bumpers, and additional chrome accents.
  • Headlights and LED Lighting – Upgraded LED headlights with automatic high-beam switching.
  • Interior – Improved trim materials, a new multimedia system with a larger touchscreen (based on Android Automotive), wireless charging, and additional USB-C ports.
  • Hybrid Versions – Expansion of the plug-in hybrid (Recharge) lineup with increased electric-only range.

Body Styles

The Volvo S90 and V90 are built on the same platform (SPA – Scalable Product Architecture) but offer different body styles:

  • S90 – A classic executive sedan with a long wheelbase, clean lines, and an elegant silhouette. An extended version, the S90L, is also produced in China.
  • V90 – A Scandinavian-style wagon: spacious, practical, yet just as stylish as the sedan. An ideal choice for travel enthusiasts.
  • V90 Cross Country – The "off-road" version of the wagon, featuring increased ground clearance, all-wheel drive, and underbody protection. Perfect for rough roads and light off-roading.

  • Collaboration with Bowers & Wilkins – The premium audio system in the S90/V90 was developed with British audiophiles and even features a "concert hall" mode simulating the acoustics of Gothenburg’s concert hall.
  • Electric Future – After the facelift, Volvo focused on hybrids, and starting in 2024, the S90 and V90, like other models, will transition to a fully electric platform.
  • Swedish Minimalism – The interior has no excess buttons: nearly all functions are controlled via the touchscreen or voice commands.
