Internal Designation and Production Years

The second generation Audi A1, unlike the first (8X, 2010–2018), received the GB index. Production started in 2018, and in 2021 the model received a minor update (radiator grille was changed and new options were added). Production will end in 2025, after which Audi will permanently discontinue the A1 to focus on electric vehicles.

Body Type and Modifications

Unlike the first generation which had a 3-door option, the second generation A1 was only produced as a 5-door Sportback. Main variants:

A1 Sportback – base version with wide engine selection
A1 Citycarver – pseudo-crossover with increased ground clearance (+40 mm), plastic protective trim and styling inspired by Audi Q2
A1 S line – sport version with aggressive body kit, stiff suspension and Alcantara interior elements

Model Description

Completely redesigned: instead of the first generation's rounded shapes – sharp lines, massive Singleframe grille and narrow LED headlights (matrix headlights in top trims). The rear with distinctive "torn" taillights resembles Audi A4/A6.

The interior became more technological:

Digital Virtual Cockpit instrument cluster (standard or optional)
MMI touchscreen (8.8" or 10.1")
Minimalist design like Audi Q3: fewer buttons, more digital solutions

Bumper Plastic Marking: >PP+EPDM-TD20<

Technical Features:

Engines:
1.0 TFSI (95/116 hp) – 3-cylinder, somewhat weak for dynamic driving
1.5 TFSI (150 hp) – with cylinder deactivation, best choice
2.0 TFSI (200 hp) – planned for S1 but never materialized
1.6 TDI (116 hp) – diesel (until 2020, then discontinued)

Transmission: 6-speed manual or 7-speed S tronic dual-clutch
Drivetrain: Front-wheel drive only (no AWD even for S line)

Interesting Facts

No hot versions – Unlike 8X (which had 231 hp S1 with AWD), GB didn't even get an S1, let alone hypothetical RS1
Citycarver was marketing – essentially a regular A1 with plastic cladding and raised ride height but no AWD or off-road capability
Audi's last diesel in B-segment – 1.6 TDI was discontinued in 2020 due to emissions regulations
Model death – In 2025 Audi will officially discontinue A1 to focus on EVs. No third generation planned.

Conclusion

Audi A1 II (GB) represents evolution in design and technology but a step back in emotions: 3-door version, AWD and sporty variants disappeared. However, it remains one of the last premium compact hatchbacks with quality build and recognizable image. On used market, 1.5 TFSI in S line trim is the optimal choice.
