The second generation Audi A5 debuted in 2016, continuing the tradition of elegant coupes from the German brand. This model combines sporty character, premium design and advanced technology, remaining one of the most stylish offerings in Audi's lineup.

Generation and Internal Designation

The second-gen A5 uses the MLB Evo platform, also shared with the Audi A4 (B9), Q5 II and other Volkswagen Group models. The internal designation for coupe and cabriolet is Type F5, while the Sportback (five-door hatchback) is Type 8F5.

Production Years and Facelift

  • Production began in 2016, with first models arriving at dealerships in early 2017

  • A facelift came in 2019: updated radiator grille, bumpers, lighting (including HD Matrix LED headlights) and new interior trim options

  • Production ended in 2024 to make way for the next generation

Available Models

The A5 II was offered in three body styles:

  • Coupe - classic two-door version with sloping roofline

  • Cabriolet - with soft-top convertible roof, maintaining elegance when open or closed

  • Sportback - five-door hatchback with fastback styling, combining practicality with coupe looks

Performance-oriented S5 and RS5 versions were also available with more powerful engines and sport-tuned suspensions.

Engines and Transmissions

The A5 II offered a wide engine range:

  • Gasoline TFSI: 1.4 TFSI (150 HP) to 3.0 TFSI (354 HP in S5)

  • Diesel TDI: 2.0 TDI (150-190 HP) and 3.0 TDI (286 HP)

Design and Technology

The A5 II featured more aggressive styling: angular lighting, prominent Singleframe grille, sharp body lines. The interior showcased Audi's signature minimalism: Virtual Cockpit digital dash, MMI touchscreen, and premium materials.

Notable technologies:

  • Matrix LED headlights (adaptive lighting without glare)

  • Semi-autonomous driving (adaptive cruise, lane keeping)

  • Augmented reality navigation (projected onto windshield)

Interesting Facts

  • The A5 Sportback was the most popular version for combining coupe style with practicality

  • The RS5 shared its 2.9 TFSI engine with the Porsche Panamera (jointly developed)

  • The cabriolet weighs 200kg more due to structural reinforcements

  • The hybrid could travel up to 50km (31 miles) on electric power alone - rare for Audi at the time

Conclusion

The Audi A5 II represents the perfect balance of style, technology and driving enjoyment. Less radical than the BMW 4 Series and less conservative than the Mercedes C-Class Coupe, it strikes an ideal compromise. Even after production ended, it remains in high demand on the used market, especially S5 and RS5 models.
