The Renault Clio X85, the third generation (Mk3), is one of the most popular models in the history of French automotive manufacturing. This compact hatchback was produced from 2005 to 2013, earning recognition for its stylish design, comfort, and reliability. Let's explore its history, modifications, and key features.

Production Years and Platform

The Renault Clio Mk3 debuted in 2005, replacing the second generation (Mk2). Production continued until 2013, after which it was succeeded by the Clio Mk4. The car was built on the Renault-Nissan B platform, which was also used in the Nissan Micra (K12).

In 2009, the model underwent a facelift, receiving an updated radiator grille, redesigned bumpers, and LED taillights. The interior and engines were also refined.

Modifications and Body Styles

The Clio Mk3 was offered in two body styles:

  • 5-door hatchback – the most popular version;
  • 3-door hatchback (Renault Clio Sport Tourer) – a rare modification for certain markets.

There was also a sporty version, the Renault Clio RS (Renaultsport Clio), featuring powerful engines and an upgraded suspension.

Engines and Transmissions

The model was equipped with a wide range of gasoline and diesel engines:

Gasoline:

  • 1.2 16V (75 hp) – the base naturally aspirated engine;
  • 1.4 16V (98 hp) – a more dynamic option;
  • 1.6 16V (110 hp) – installed on higher-trim versions;
  • 2.0 16V (200 hp) – turbocharged engine for the Clio RS.

Diesel:

  • 1.5 dCi (68–110 hp) – fuel-efficient and reliable engines, popular in Europe.

Transmissions included a 5- or 6-speed manual, as well as a 4-speed automatic (on some versions).

How to Remove the Front Bumper

  1. Lift and secure the hood.

  4. Move to the sides. Behind the wheel liners, unscrew one bolt (10mm) on each side, which are screwed upward from below and secure the bumper corners to the fenders. The liners do not need to be removed; just detach two clips and bend the liners aside.
  5. Release the clips in the fenders, grab the bumper corners by hand, and pull toward yourself.
  6. With an assistant, remove the bumper forward, paying attention to the wiring.
  7. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the fog lights and detach the temperature sensor.

  • Racing career – the Clio RS competed in touring car races, including the Renault Clio Cup.
  • Sales in Russia – the Clio Mk3 was officially sold in Russia but in limited numbers due to competition with the Logan and Sandero.

Conclusion

The Renault Clio Mk3 is a successful model combining practicality, fuel efficiency, and a sporty character (in the RS version). Despite its age, many units remain on the roads thanks to their reliability and affordable parts. If you’re looking for an inexpensive used hatchback with European flair, the third-gen Clio is a worthy choice.
