Production Years and Facelift
The first generation Mazda 5 (Mk1) was produced from 2005 to 2010. In 2008, the model underwent a minor facelift that updated the radiator grille, bumpers, headlights, and interior. The suspension and sound insulation were also improved.
Model Code and Platform
The Mazda 5 Mk1 carried factory codes CR19 (for gasoline versions) and CW19 (for diesel). The car was built on the Ford C1 platform, which was also used by the Ford Focus Mk2, Volvo S40, and first-generation Mazda 3.
Body Type and Variants
The Mazda 5 is a compact MPV with 6 or 7-seat configurations. Sliding rear doors made passenger access easier. In Europe, the following variants were available:

Front Bumper Removal

Open the hood.

Under the hood, unscrew two bolts and remove two push pins (use a flathead screwdriver in the side slot) securing the front part of the bumper and radiator grille.

From underneath, unscrew eleven 10mm bolts (screwed upward from below) securing the lower part.

Turn the wheels outward.

(Both sides) Remove three push pins securing the fender liner (front part).

(Both sides) Move the fender liner aside and unscrew one 8mm bolt (screwed upward from below) securing the corner to the fender.

Release the sides from the retaining clips (pull the corner toward you).

With an assistant, remove the front bumper by pulling it forward (watch for wires and hoses).

Disconnect fog light connectors (if equipped).

If headlight washers are installed, disconnect the hoses (fluid will leak out).
Rear Bumper Removal

Open the tailgate.

In the trunk area, unscrew two bolts securing the top part of the rear bumper.

From underneath, unscrew two bolts and remove two clips (screwed and inserted upward from below) securing the lower part.

In the wheel arches, unscrew bolts securing the fender liners.

Move the fender liners aside and unscrew one bolt per side (screwed upward from below) securing the corners to the fenders.

Release the clips in the fenders (pull the corners toward you).

Release four guide pins that insert into the tailgate mounts (marked with blue arrows in diagrams, simply pull toward you).

With an assistant, remove the bumper by pulling it backward (watch for wires).

Disconnect electrical connectors (if equipped).
Model Description
The Mazda 5 Mk1 stood out with its dynamic "sport van" design. Unlike more angular competitors (Opel Zafira, Volkswagen Touran), it featured flowing lines, a sleek profile, and a characteristic grille.
The interior offered three rows of seats (third row suitable only for children), with the second row featuring individual seats (like in larger MPVs). Cargo capacity ranged from 112 to 857 liters (with seats folded).
Handling was at hatchback levels thanks to its rigid body and tuned suspension. However, the compact dimensions (4.56 m length) limited interior space.

Conclusion
The Mazda 5 Mk1 was one of few compact MPVs with sporty character. Despite its size, it offered comfort and good handling. The 2008 facelift improved styling and comfort before being replaced by the Mk2 in 2010.
Today it remains an affordable used option for practical yet stylish transport. Main issues are suspension wear (especially on bad roads) and rust in cold climates.
