The Mazda 626 1997–2002 model belongs to the fifth generation (code GF/GW), which replaced the GE series (1991–1997). This car was produced in sedan and station wagon (Estate) body styles, and in some markets as a hatchback. In Japan, it was sold as the Mazda Capella, while in North America and Europe as the 626.

 

Modifications and Engines

Depending on the market, the Mazda 626 GE/GH was offered with different engines:

Gasoline:
1.8L (FP-DE, 115 hp) - base version for Europe
2.0L (FS-DE, 130–140 hp) - most common variant
2.5L V6 (KL-DE, 170 hp) - top version with automatic transmission

Diesel (Europe only):
2.0L RF turbodiesel (90–110 hp) - economical option

In the US and Canada, only the 2.0L and 2.5L V6 gasoline engines were offered, while in Japan there was also a 1.8L with front-wheel or all-wheel drive (Capella).

How to Remove Front Bumper

  1. Under the hood, unscrew the bolts securing the radiator grille and upper part of the front bumper

  2. Remove one bolt on each side and take out the turn signals

  3. Under the turn signals, remove the clips

  4. Access from underneath the vehicle

  5. Unscrew six bolts securing the lower part

  6. To avoid removing wheels, turn them to the side

  7. (Left and right sides) Unscrew three bolts securing the fender liner, move it aside and remove the bolt (screwed bottom-up) securing the corner to the fender

  8. Now the hardest part: from the engine compartment, unscrew six nuts securing the brackets to the body. Alternatively, you can detach brackets from the bumper, but it's even harder

  9. Remove the bumper by pulling it forward (watch for wires and hoses)

  10. Disconnect electrical connectors (if present)

  11. Disconnect headlight washer hoses (if equipped)

How to Remove Rear Bumper

  1. Open the trunk

  2. Unscrew two bolts in the trunk opening

  3. Remove two bolts on each side, release the clips and remove the taillights

  4. Under the taillights, remove one bolt on each side

  5. From underneath, unscrew two bolts

  6. In wheel arches, remove three bolts on each side

  7. Remove one bolt on each side (screwed bottom-up) securing the corners to the fenders

  8. Now the hardest part: unscrew four nuts (there might be two, depending on body type) securing brackets to the rear trunk panel

  9. (Requires two people) Carefully remove the bumper backward from the bracket guides in the fenders
